Following the success of the original Ten Pieces Prom, the BBC will be bringing a new selection of classical essentials to Radio 2 on Friday 2nd September. This selection of pieces will be aimed at secondary-school pupils rather than primary pupils who were the previous target audience.
We think it is a brilliant programme and fully support anything that brings classical music to schools – our boys were shown the performance at school and talked about it for weeks and weeks afterwards.
The Ten Pieces include:-
- Toccata and Fugue in D Minor – J. S. Bach
- ‘Habenera’ and ‘Toreador Song’ from Carmen Suite No.2 – Bizet
- ‘Mambo’ from Symphonic Dances from West Side Story – Bernstein
- Night Ferry – Anna Clyne
- Trumpet Concerto, 3rd Movement – Haydn
- Concerto for Turntables & Orchestra, 5th Movement – Gabriel Prokofiev
- Symphony No. 10, 2nd Movement – Shostakovich
- The Lark Ascending – Vaughan Williams
- ‘Dies Irae’ and ‘Tuba Mirum’ from Requiem – Verdi
- ‘Ride of the Valkyries’ from Die Walkure – Wagner
We are a fairly musical household (clarinet, saxophone, trombone, drums and piano) and we tried to choose our favourites. An incredibly difficult decision – but out top 3 are 1) Ride of Valkyries by Wagner (voted for by Age 13 /piano), 2) Mambo from West Side Story (voted for by age 10 / Trombone & Drums) and 3) Habenera from Carmen by Bizet (voted by me / age xx(!) / Clarinet) but they are all tremendous pieces.
As always, the BBC have an incredible range of supporting resources:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0647v1v
