We have just finished Episode 3 of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix this evening.
It took a great deal of willpower not to hit the button to watch Episode 4, but to switch off and dunk the boys in the bath. The only question is will I be able to wait until tomorrow to watch Episode 4 with the boys, or will I sneak a peek when they are in bed (and then practice feigning surprise when I watch with them again tomorrow!). Think I’ll wait. It’s magical to watch it with them.
Everyone in the house is loving it. I’ve seen (most of) the 2004 film where Jim Carrey plays Lemony Snicket, which I also loved. However, having seen that, means I’m sat super tense watching the Netflix version as I kind of know what is coming…. and that the good news and any happiness for the Baudelaire siblings is only ever temporary …… (I say I’ve seen most of the 2004 film, but at the time missed the final 15 minutes ! so I’m not actually sure what happens in the end which I’m quite glad of now.)
Anyway, back to the Netflix series, it’s wonderful. The way they use Patrick Warbuton as an on-screen (but not part of the action) Lemony Snicket narrator is wonderful – bringing you down to earth with grave news of impending doom or dastardly deeds – and then leaving you hanging, it’s terrific and tense.
Neil Patrick Harris is brilliant as Count Olaf. It is such an (awfully) wonderful character, and just like Jim Carrey in the film, he brings the character to life in such a fabulous and terrifying way.
With 8 episodes in total, the series moves at a slower pace that the film, which just means more brilliant scenes and more tense moments waiting for Count Olaf and his equally-nasty gang to strike next.
A great watch. Catch it if you can.
